Also known as Bloodflower, Swallow Wort, or Scarlet Milkweed, Asclepias curassavica is an attractive plant that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Reddish-orange flowers appear in mid June and last into October. Milkweed is fairly drought tolerant as well as deer tolerant. This pretty plant grows to about 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide. Plant in full sun. In cooler midwest climates, this plant is often used as an annual, but in So Cal, this is an evergreen perennial! Native to South Africa but has naturalized in many temperate climates around the globe. USDA Zones 9-11.
