Spice Bush is a beautiful California native shrub with fragrant foliage.  It has attractive light green oval shaped leaves that will provide some Fall color before they drop.  It can grow up to 7-10 feet tall iand wide and can be used as a large background shrub or small multi-trunk tree.  Attractive red flowers appear in Spring through Summer.  Calycanthus is quite an amzing plant in that it can tolerate both sandy and clay soils with fairly poor drainage, and will resist deer somewhat.  Calicanthus does best in a part shade condition away from reflected heat and long exposure to hot sun.  It's found naturally along riverbanks where it can have access to regular water.  USDA zones 7-10.
