CitraBlue® St. Augustine

CitraBlue® is a newer variety of St. Augustine grass developed by the University of Florida. It was bred to improve on older varieties like Floratam by offering better color, stronger disease resistance, and lower maintenance needs.

This grass is known for its deep blue-green color that stays rich throughout the growing season. It has a dense, horizontal growth habit, which helps crowd out weeds and reduces the need for frequent mowing. CitraBlue® also has improved shade tolerance, making it a good option for lawns that don’t receive full sun all day.

One of the biggest advantages of CitraBlue® is its disease resistance, especially against gray leaf spot, which is a common issue for many warm-season grasses. It also requires less nitrogen fertilizer than older varieties and shows good drought tolerance once established.

Because of these qualities, CitraBlue® has quickly become a popular choice for homeowners who want a durable, attractive lawn with fewer maintenance demands.

Care & Maintenance

  • Mowing: Maintain CitraBlue® at a height of 2–3 inches. Its slower upright growth means less frequent mowing compared to Floratam or Palmetto.

  • Watering: Water deeply and infrequently once established, about 1 inch per week including rainfall. During establishment, water daily until the sod has rooted.

  • Fertilization: CitraBlue® requires less nitrogen than older St. Augustine varieties. Apply 2–3 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. annually, split into 2–3 applications during the growing season.

  • Pre-Emergent Applications: To keep weeds under control, apply a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring (before soil temps reach 55°F) and again in early fall. The dense growth of CitraBlue® helps suppress weeds naturally, but pre-emergents provide added protection, especially during establishment.

  • Disease & Pest Management: Thanks to its resistance, CitraBlue® is less susceptible to common lawn diseases, though monitoring for chinch bugs and other pests is still recommended.

With proper care, CitraBlue® provides a durable, low-maintenance lawn that holds its color and performance season after season.
